But how can we go about maintaining a clutter-free environment on a daily basis?

Minimalist living is a small but growing lifestyle based on the principle that less is more. It’s sometimes seen as a way to get rid of things and start afresh. Helpful to those wishing to live a more peaceful life, the benefits of downsizing also extend to the environment.

So, what are some of the practical lessons that we can learn to help us keep both our homes and heads clear?

Storage is significant

As the helpful clutter-combating aphorism goes: “a place for everything and everything in its place”. All household items should have a place to be stored, and those items should be stored away when not in use.

There are some great answers to storage problems that can keep clutter out of your way. Lots of furniture such as beds and tables come with discreet built-in space.

Alternatively, identifying a suitable place in your house for easily storing items can be equally useful. For example, under the stairs can be a very practical place.

So is removing items

There’s a very good reason why some people find it hard to get rid of clutter.

A report by researchers at Yale suggests that letting go of clutter can actually cause you pain. According to their findings, the two parts of the brain that are generally associated with pain show increased activity when we are deciding which objects should be discarded.

To ease this pain a little, try sorting items you’re not sure about into assorted boxes for items you haven’t used for a month, six months and a year. At the end of that time, if an item hasn’t made its way out of the box, you probably don’t need it.

If you need a large scale house clearance at the end of this process, we can save you money and keep items out of the waste-stream.

You have to ask others

It’s always useful to have someone else’s opinion. Find someone you trust who will answer you honestly when you ask if you simply have too much stuff.
